Powder Milling, Process and Essential Equipment
Powder milling is the process of reducing solid materials into fine powders using mechanical forces. Milling improves powder flowability, reactivity, bulk density, and compressibility – properties that are critical in pharmaceutical, food, and chemical production.
What is Powder Milling?
Powder milling (also known as particle size reduction) involves breaking down bulk material into smaller, uniform particles. This is typically achieved by feeding the material into a mill where it is subjected to stresses that fracture it into finer pieces. Various milling technologies (e.g. hammer, jet, or ball mills) use impact or compression to reach the desired fineness. The goal is to obtain a specific particle size distribution that meets product requirements. In pharmaceuticals, proper milling can improve drug dissolution and absorption.
How the Powder Milling Process Works?
In a typical dry powder milling process, raw material is loaded into a mill and broken down by mechanical action. For example, in a conical mill, a rotating impeller pushes the material against a conical screen. The particles are rubbed and sheared by the impeller blades and forced through the perforated screen. Coarse particles are retained and continue to be milled until they are small enough to pass through the screen openings. By using different screen mesh sizes or changing the impeller speed, operators can adjust the final particle size and distribution as needed. This gentle milling approach avoids excessive heat and yields a narrow particle size range. The result is a fine, consistent powder ready for the next processing step.

Equipment for Powder Milling
To carry out powder milling safely and efficiently, we typically employ a combination of specialized equipment. Three key pieces of equipment for a modern powder milling system are:
- Conical Mill (Uni-Mill) – A conical screen mill uses a rotating impeller and a conical screen to grind material to a uniform particle size. Our conical mill design allows high throughput with minimal heat build-up. It generates very low dust and noise during operation. The milling head has no metal-to-metal contact, preventing metal contamination and excessive wear. The Conical Mill is easy to clean and can be quickly disassembled for cleaning or sterilization, making it well-suited for hygienic industries such as pharmaceuticals.
- Powder Recovery Cyclone (Uni-Dust) – A cyclone separator connects to the milling or tablet compression process to capture fine powder dust at the source. The cyclone uses vortex separation to remove airborne powder from the airstream, typically capturing 90–99.9% of waste powder. This prevents product loss and keeps the workspace dust-free. This reclaiming of powder improves batch yield and reduces reliance on dust extraction filters. The collected powder can be retained for re-use or safe disposal as needed. With no moving parts or filter elements, the Powder Recovery Cyclone requires minimal maintenance.
- Vacuum Conveyor (Uni-Vac) – This is a pneumatic conveying system for moving powders between process equipment in a contained, automated way. A Vacuum Conveyor uses a vacuum pump to pull powder through sealed tubing from one piece of equipment to another. This transfer method is dust-tight and gentle on the product. It automates and accelerates material loading, reducing the need for manual handling. The conveyor can move powder horizontally and vertically, allowing flexible equipment layout. We can mount a vacuum conveyor above a mill or mixer to feed it directly. Vacuum transfer also improves operator safety by preventing dust exposure, keeps the production area cleaner, and speeds up production.
We combine proper milling techniques with reliable dust control and powder transfer to create an efficient powder processing workflow. By integrating conical mills for precision milling, cyclonic powder recovery for dust containment, and vacuum conveying for automated handling, you can achieve consistent product quality with a streamlined workflow.
